小アルカナの追加の意味

　この項目は、ウェイト氏が研究目的で、当時使われていたタロット占いの意味を集めたものの中で、敢えて本文中で採用しなかった「従来からの占いの意味」が掲載されています。
　このため、ライダーウェイト・タロットで占いをする時には、基本的には考慮する必要の無い意味です。

WANDS. King.--Generally favourable; may signify a good marriage. 棒の王−一般的に言って好意的。よい結婚を示すかもしれない。

Reversed: Advice that should be followed. 逆位置：従うべき助言。

Queen.--A good harvest, which may be taken in several senses. 棒の女王−豊作、それはいくつかの意味で得られるかもしれない。

　単なる物質的な豊饒ではなく、色々な感覚や意味において「豊饒感」があるということですね。

Reversed: Goodwill towards the Querent, but without the opportunity to exercise it. 逆位置：質問者（被占者）への好意、しかしそれを行使する機会は無い。

Knight.--A bad card; according to some readings, alienation. 棒の騎士−悪いカード。いくつかの記述によれば、疎外。

Reversed: For a woman, marriage, but probably frustrated. 逆位置：女性にとっては結婚、しかし、おそらく挫折する。

Page.--Young man of family in search of young lady. 棒の騎士見習−若い女性を捜している、家族の若い男性。

Reversed: Bad news. 逆位置：悪い知らせ。

Ten.--Difficulties and contradictions, if near a good card. 棒の１０−よいカードの近にある場合、障害および矛盾。

Nine.--Generally speaking, a bad card. 棒の９−概して言えば、悪いカード。

Eight.--Domestic disputes for a married person. 棒の８−既婚の人にとっては、家庭の論争。

Seven.--A dark child. 棒の７−ブルネット（もしくは浅黒い肌）の子供。

　ブルネットとは、茶褐色の髪のことです。
　「dark」の意味を、外面的ではなく内面的と捕らえると、「陰気な子供」となります。

Six.--Servants may lose the confidence of their masters; a young lady may be betrayed by a friend. 棒の６−使用人は主人の信用を失うかもしれない。若い女性は友達から裏切られるかもしれない。

Reversed: Fulfilment of deferred hope. 逆位置：延期された希望の実現。

Five.--Success in financial speculation. 棒の５−金融投機における成功。

Reversed: Quarrels may be turned to advantage. 逆位置：口論は有利となるよう利用されるだろう。

Four.--Unexpected good fortune. 棒の４−予期しない幸運。

Reversed: A married woman will have beautiful children. 逆位置：既婚女性は美しい子供を授かるでしょう。

Three.--A very good card; collaboration will favour enterprise. 棒の３−非常によいカード。共同作業は事業に好都合だろう。

Two.--A young lady may expect trivial disappointments. 棒の２−若い貴婦人は、ささいな失望を予期するかもしれない。

Ace.--Calamities of all kinds. 棒のエース−すべての種類の惨事。

Reversed: A sign of birth. 逆位置：誕生の兆候。

Cups. King.--Beware of ill-will on the part of a man of position, and of hypocrisy pretending to help. 杯の王−地位のある男性の役割上の悪意、および助けるふりをする偽善に気をつけて。

　上司の地位を利用した嫌がらせ、または困った時に助けるふりをして実は足元をすくう、もしくは下心のある、イヤな奴・・・ですか。

Reversed: Loss. 逆位置：損失。

Queen.--Sometimes denotes a woman of equivocal character. 杯の女王−時々、曖昧な性格の女性を意味する。

Reversed: A rich marriage for a man and a distinguished one for a woman. 逆位置：男性にとっては裕福な結婚、および女性にとっては著名な人。

　この「distinguished one／著名な人」は、たぶん女性なのだと思われます。

Knight.--A visit from a friend, who will bring unexpected money to the Querent. 杯の騎士−友達の訪問。この人は予期しない金銭を質問者（被占者）にもたらすだろう。

Reversed: Irregularity. 逆位置：不規則。

Page.--Good augury; also a young man who is unfortunate in love. 杯の騎士見習−よい前兆。また、恋愛において不運な若者。

Reversed: Obstacles of all kinds. 逆位置：すべての種類の障害。

Ten.--For a male Querent, a good marriage and one beyond his expectations. 杯の１０−男性の質問者（被占者）にとってはよい結婚で、彼の期待以上のもの。

Reversed: Sorrow; also a serious quarrel. 逆位置：悲しみ。また、重大な口論。

Nine.--Of good augury for military men. 杯の９−軍人にとっては、良い前兆の。

Reversed: Good business. 逆位置：よい商売。

Eight.--Marriage with a fair woman. 杯の８−公平な女性との結婚生活。

Reversed: Perfect satisfaction. 逆位置：完全な充足。

Seven.--Fair child; idea, design, resolve, movement. 杯の７−金髪で色白の子供。考え、設計（計画）、決心、移動。

Reversed: Success, if accompanied by the Three of Cups. 逆位置：もし杯の３を伴っていれば、成功。

Six.--Pleasant memories. 杯の６−楽しい思い出。

Reversed: Inheritance to fall in quickly. 逆位置：すぐに転がり込む遺産。

Five.--Generally favourable; a happy marriage; also patrimony, legacies, gifts, success in enterprise. 杯の５−一般的には好意的。幸福な結婚。また、世襲財産、遺産、贈り物、事業の成功。

Reversed: Return of some relative who has not been seen for long. 逆位置：長い間会っていなかった、ある親戚の帰還（返礼）。

Four.--Contrarieties. 杯の４−反対。

Reversed: Presentiment. 逆位置：よくない予感。

Three.--Unexpected advancement for a military man. 杯の３−軍人にとっては、予期しない昇進。

Reversed: Consolation, cure, end of the business. 逆位置：慰め、治療、商売の終了。

Two.--Favourable in things of pleasure and business, as well as love; also wealth and honour. 杯の２−楽しみや商売はもちろん、愛においても、好意的。また、富および名誉。

Reversed: Passion. 逆位置：情熱。

Ace.--Inflexible will, unalterable law. 杯のエース−確固たる意志、不変の法則。

Reversed: Unexpected change of position. 逆位置：予期しない地位の変化。

SWORDS. King.--A lawyer, senator, doctor. 剣の王−弁護士、上院議員、医者。

Reversed: A bad man; also a caution to put an end to a ruinous lawsuit. 逆位置：悪い男性。また、破滅的な訴訟に終止符を打つための警告。

Queen.--A widow. 剣の女王−未亡人。

Reversed: A bad woman, with ill-will towards the Querent. 逆位置：質問者（被占者）への悪意を持つ、悪い女性。

Knight.--A soldier, man of arms, satellite, stipendiary; heroic action predicted for soldier. 剣の騎士−兵士、軍人、従者、給料を受けている人。兵士にとっては、予言された英雄的行為。

Reversed: Dispute with an imbecile person; for a woman, struggle with a rival, who will be conquered. 逆位置：低能な人物との論争。女性にとっては、競争相手との闘争で、その相手は征服されるだろう。

Page.--An indiscreet person will pry into the Querent's secrets. 剣の騎士見習−無分別な人物が、質問者（被占者）の秘密を詮索するだろう。

Reversed: Astonishing news. 逆位置：驚くべき知らせ。

Ten.--Followed by Ace and King, imprisonment; for girl or wife, treason on the part of friends. 剣の１０−エースおよび王の次にきた場合は、投獄（監禁）。少女あるいは妻にとっては、友達のほうの反逆。

Reversed: Victory and consequent fortune for a soldier in war. 逆位置：戦争中の兵士にとっては、勝利および結果としての財産。

Nine.--An ecclesiastic, a priest; generally, a card of bad omen. 剣の９−聖職者、司祭。一般には、悪い前兆のカード。

Reversed: Good ground for suspicion against a doubtful person. 逆位置：疑わしい人に対する疑惑のための、正当な根拠。

　怪しい人物ではあるが、とりあえず信用しても良い理由がある、ということですかね。

Eight.--For a woman, scandal spread in her respect. 剣の８−女性にとっては、彼女に関連する醜聞の流布。

Reversed: Departure of a relative. 逆位置：親戚の出発。

Seven.--Dark girl; a good card; it promises a country life after a competence has been secured. 剣の７−ブルネット（もしくは浅黒い肌）の少女。よいカード。技能がしっかりした後、田園生活の見込みがある。

　ブルネットとは、茶褐色の髪のことです。
　「dark」の意味を、外面的ではなく内面的と捕らえると、「陰気な少女」となります。

　最後の部分は、都会で仕事をし、一定の技能を身につけた後、地方に出て独立開業するとか、その業界から引退して、田舎で農業を始めるというような感じですかね。

Reversed: Good advice, probably neglected. 逆位置：おそらく無視された、よい助言。

Six.--The voyage will be pleasant. 剣の６−その旅行は楽しくなるだろう。

Reversed: Unfavourable issue of lawsuit. 逆位置：訴訟における不利な問題点。

Five.--An attack on the fortune of the Querent. 剣の５−質問者（被占者）の財産に対する攻撃。

Reversed: A sign of sorrow and mourning. 逆位置：悲しみと悲嘆の兆候。

　「sorrow／悲しみ」は、一般的な不幸に対する感情で、「mourning／悲嘆」は、特に人の死に対する感情となります。

Four.--A bad card, but if reversed a qualified success may be expected by wise administration of affairs. 剣の４−悪いカードであるが、逆位置の場合は、条件付きの成功が、仕事の賢明な管理によって期待されるかもしれない。

Reversed: A certain success following wise administration. 逆位置：賢明な管理の後の、一定の成功。

Three.--For a woman, the flight of her lover. 剣の３−女性にとっては、彼女の恋人の飛躍。

Reversed: A meeting with one whom the Querent has compromised; also a nun. 逆位置：質問者（被占者）を危険にさらした人との出会い。また、修道女。

Two.--Gifts for a lady, influential protection for a man in search of help. 剣の２−貴婦人への贈り物。助けを求める人にとって大きな影響力のある保護（保障）。

Reversed: Dealings with rogues. 逆位置：悪党との取り引き。

Ace.--Great prosperity or great misery. 剣のエース−大きな繁栄、あるいは大きな悲惨。

　参考文献によっては、全く正反対の意味になるということです。

Reversed: Marriage broken off, for a woman, through her own imprudence. 逆位置：女性にとっては、自らの軽率さにより破綻した結婚。

PENTACLES. King.--A rather dark man, a merchant, master, professor. 五芒貨の王−幾分ブルネット（もしくは浅黒い肌）の男性、商人、マスター、教授。

　ブルネットとは、茶褐色の髪のことです。
　「dark」の意味を、外面的ではなく内面的と捕らえると、「幾分陰気な人」となります。

Reversed: An old and vicious man. 逆位置：老いた悪意のある男性。

Queen.--Dark woman; presents from a rich relative; rich and happy marriage for a young man. 五芒貨の女王−ブルネット（もしくは浅黒い肌）の女性。裕福な親戚からの贈り物。若い男性にとっては、裕福で幸福な結婚。

Reversed: An illness. 逆位置：病気。

Knight.--An useful man; useful discoveries. 五芒貨の騎士−有益な男性。有益な発見。

Reversed: A brave man out of employment. 逆位置：失業している勇敢な人。

Page.--A dark youth; a young officer or soldier; a child. 五芒貨の騎士見習−ブルネット（もしくは浅黒い肌）の若者。若い将校（役人）か兵士。子供。

Reversed: Sometimes degradation and sometimes pillage. 逆位置：低落を意味することもあれば、略奪を意味することもある。

Ten.--Represents house or dwelling, and derives its value from other cards. 五芒貨の１０−家か住居を表わし、他のカードからその価値を引き出す。

　家を意味するカードで、その家の価値や状態は、それに続くカードの善し悪しで決まるということですね。

Reversed: An occasion which may be fortunate or otherwise. 逆位置：幸運かもしれないし、あるいはその逆かもしれない機会。

　まだるっこしい書き方ですが、幸運・不運にかかわらず、ある転機が訪れるということですね。

Nine.--Prompt fulfilment of what is presaged by neighbouring cards. 五芒貨の９−隣のカードによって予測されるものの迅速な実現。

Reversed: Vain hopes. 逆位置：無益な希望。

Eight.--A young man in business who has relations with the Querent; a dark girl. 五芒貨の８−質問者（被占者）と関係のある若い実業家。ブルネット（もしくは浅黒い肌）の少女。

Reversed: The Querent will be compromised in a matter of money-lending. 逆位置：質問者（被占者）は金を貸す問題で、危険にさらされる（妥協させられる）だろう。

Seven.--Improved position for a lady's future husband. 五芒貨の７−貴婦人の将来の夫にとっては、向上した立場。

Reversed: Impatience, apprehension, suspicion. 逆位置：短気、心配、疑い。

Six.--The present must not be relied on. 五芒貨の６−贈り物を当てにしてはならない。

Reversed: A check on the Querent's ambition. 逆位置：質問者（被占者）の野心の検査。

Five.--Conquest of fortune by reason. 五芒貨の５−理性による運命の征服。

Reversed: Troubles in love. 逆位置：愛情面での心配事。

Four.--For a bachelor, pleasant news from a lady. 五芒貨の４−独身男性にとっては、貴婦人からの楽しい知らせ。

Reversed: Observation, hindrances. 逆位置：観察、妨害。

Three.--If for a man, celebrity for his eldest son. 五芒貨の３−男性にとっては、彼の長男のための名声。

Reversed: Depends on neighbouring cards. 逆位置：隣のカードに依存します。

Two.--Troubles are more imaginary than real. 五芒貨の２−心配事は、現実よりも想像上のものです。

Reversed: Bad omen, ignorance, injustice. 逆位置：悪い前兆、無知、不正。

Ace.--The most favourable of all cards. 五芒貨のエース−すべてのカードの中で最も好意的。

Reversed: A share in the finding of treasure. 逆位置：宝の発見の分け前。

It will be observed (1) that these additamenta have little connexion with the pictorial designs of the cards to which they refer, as these correspond with the more important speculative values; (2) and further that the additional meanings are very often in disagreement with those previously given. （以下のことについて）気付くだろう。 (1)これらの追加の意味は、より重要な推論的な価値に相当しているようには、それらが参照するカードの絵の図案との関連をほとんど持っていない。 (2)さらに付け加えると、追加の意味は、非常に多くの場合、以前に与えられたものと相違している。

　意訳すると、
　(1)追加の意味は、そのカードの持つ基本的な意味を持たされたライダーウェイト版のカードデザインとは、ほとんど関連付けができない。
　(2)そればかりか、追加の意味は、そのカードの持つ基本的な意味とは、違っている。
ということであり、それゆえ、ウェイト氏は、そのような「追加の意味」を、正しくない、役に立たないと思っているわけです。

All meanings are largely independent of one another and all are reduced, accentuated or subject to modification and sometimes almost reversal by their place in a sequence. 全ての意味は、お互い（の意味）から大部分は独立していおり、そして、すべて（の意味）は、（カードの）並びの中にあるそれらの場所によって、縮小され、強調され、または修正や時にはほとんど逆転を受ける。

　追加の意味は、同じカードの意味なのに、お互いに一貫性がなく、独立してバラバラなように見えるということですね。
　また、置かれた場所によっても、意味が変化していきます。
　これでは、まともな占いなんて、できるはずもありません。
　占い師が、質問者の状況に合わせて、都合よくカード解釈の幅を広げたということなのでしょう。

There is scarcely any canon of criticism in matters of this kind. この種類の問題に関して、批判の基準は、ほとんどない。

　しょせんカードの解釈というのは、個人的な考え方に関するものなので、基準を作りようにも出来るものでは無いということです。

I suppose that in proportion as any system descends from generalities to details it becomes naturally the more precarious; and in the records of professional fortune-telling, it offers more of the dregs and lees of the subject. どんなシステムも一般法則から詳細にまで言及するとともに、私はそれを比例により推測しており、それは当然より不安定なものとなる。そして、専門的な占いの記録では、それは、主題についての、さらなる屑（くず）と澱（おり）を提供している。

　ウェイト氏は、職業占い師に対しては、かなり批判的ですよね。
　まあ、そう言われても、しょうがない面はあります。

At the same time, divinations based on intuition and second sight are of little practical value unless they come down from the region of universals to that of particulars; but in proportion as this gift is present in a particular case, the specific meanings recorded by past cartomancists will be disregarded in favour of the personal appreciation of card values. 同時に、もしそれら（占い）が、普遍的特性の領域から詳細のそれ（領域）まで下りてこない限り、直観と透視力に基づいた占いは、実用的価値がほとんどない。しかし、この才能が特別の場合に存在することと比例して、過去のカード占い師によって記録された特定の意味は、カードの価値の個人の評価に有利であるとして軽視されるであろう。

　占いというものが、普遍的原理を基本として、そこから個別の占いメッセージを引き出せるような体系であれば、それは「研究して、その結果を後世に残す価値がある」ものといえます。
　ただし、それが、特定の占い師の「一般的でない特別な才能」に基づくものであるならば、従来の「占い師が作成したカードの意味」というのは、個人的な属性にあるものであり、他の人には理解できないし、使えないものとなります。
　だからこそ、ウェイト氏は、「従来の占いの意味」を重要視しないということです。

This has been intimated already. このことは、既に暗示されている。

It seems necessary to add the following speculative readings. 次に続く思索的な読み方を加えることが必要に思われる。

　「speculative reading／思索的な読み方」というのは、おそらくはカードの意味を「類推」から導き出すということですが、残念ながら、この方法は、この本には示されていません。
　今後の研究に期待しよう、ということなのでしょう。
