§3　THE GREATER ARCANA AND THEIR DIVINATORY MEANINGS
大アルカナと占いの意味

　ウェイト氏が研究目的で、当時使われていたタロット占いの意味を集めたものなので、全く一貫性がないのが特徴です。
　現代においても、実践的な占いの場合は、ここに書かれている意味は参考程度に留めておいた方が無難ですね。

　なお、当時主流のマルセイユ版での解釈がベースと思われますので、ライダーウェイト・タロットで占いをする場合は、全く違う意味になりますので、決して参考にはしないでください。（笑）

1. THE MAGICIAN.--Skill, diplomacy, address, subtlety; sickness, pain, loss, disaster, snares of enemies; self-confidence, will; the Querent, if male. 1. 魔術師−技能、外交的手腕、手際良さ、巧妙さ。病気、苦痛、損害、大災害、敵の罠。自信、意志。質問者（被占者）が男性であれば、質問者。

Reversed: Physician, Magus, mental disease, disgrace, disquiet. 逆位置：医師、魔法使い、精神病、不名誉、不安。

2. THE HIGH PRIESTESS.--Secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed; the woman who interests the Querent, if male; the Querent herself, if female; silence, tenacity; mystery, wisdom, science. 2. 高等女司祭−秘密、神秘、まだ隠された未来。質問者（被占者）が男性の場合、質問者に興味を起こさせる女性。質問者が女性の場合、彼女自身。沈黙、粘り強さ。秘法、賢明、科学。

Reversed: Passion, moral or physical ardour, conceit, surface knowledge. 逆位置：情熱、倫理的あるいは肉体的な熱情、自負心、うわべの知識。

3. THE EMPRESS.--Fruitfulness, action, initiative, length of days; the unknown, clandestine; also difficulty, doubt, ignorance. 3. 女帝−豊饒、行動、計画、長い時代。未知、秘密。また、困難、疑惑、無知。

Reversed: Light, truth, the unravelling of involved matters, public rejoicings; according to another reading, vacillation. 逆位置：光、真実、複雑な問題の解明、公共の喜び。別の読みによれば、動揺。

4. THE EMPEROR.--Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person; aid, reason, conviction; also authority and will. 4. 皇帝−安定、権力、保護、理解（実現）。偉大な人。助力、理性、確信。また、権威および意志。

Reversed: Benevolence, compassion, credit; also confusion to enemies, obstruction, immaturity. 逆位置：慈悲心、同情心、信用。また、敵に対する混乱、妨害、未熟。

5. THE HIEROPHANT.--Marriage, alliance, captivity, servitude; by another account, mercy and goodness; inspiration; the man to whom the Querent has recourse. 5. 法皇−結婚、同盟、束縛、隷属。別の記述によると、慈悲および徳。霊感。質問者（被占者）がが頼っている人。

Reversed: Society, good understanding, concord, overkindness, weakness. 逆位置：社会、よい理解、調和、お節介、弱さ。

6. THE LOVERS.--Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome. 6. 恋人たち−魅力、愛、美、裁判は打ち勝つ。

Reversed: Failure, foolish designs. Another account speaks of marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds. 逆位置：失敗、愚かな陰謀。別の記事では、挫折した（もしくは、欲求不満）、全ての性質の反対のある結婚を伝えている。

　「contrarieties of all kinds／全ての性質の反対」というのは、たぶん「色々な点で考え方の違う」とか「気が合わない」というような感じかな。
　要するに、「性格の不一致」による離婚や別居みたいなものかと。

7. THE CHARIOT.--Succour, providence; also war, triumph, presumption, vengeance, trouble. 7. 戦車−救助、神意（摂理）。また、戦争、勝利、でしゃばり、復讐、心配。

Reversed: Riot, quarrel, dispute, litigation, defeat. 逆位置：暴動、口論、論争、訴訟、敗北。

8. FORTITUDE.--Power, energy, action, courage, magnanimity; also complete success and honours. 8. 剛毅−権力、精力、行動、勇気、寛大。また、完全な成功および名誉。

　タイトルが、「STRENGTH／力」ではなく、古いタイプのカードのタイトルである「FORTITUDE／剛毅」であることに注意。
　新しいカードの意味ではなく、あくまでも「従来のカードの意味だよ」ということを、暗示しているのかな。

Reversed: Despotism, abuse if power, weakness, discord, sometimes even disgrace. 逆位置：専制政治、権力であれば乱用、弱さ、不和、時々不名誉でさえも。

9. THE HERMIT.--Prudence, circumspection; also and especially treason, dissimulation, roguery, corruption. 9. 隠者−思慮深さ、慎重さ。また、そして特に、反逆、偽装、悪事、汚職。

Reversed: Concealment, disguise, policy, fear, unreasoned caution. 逆位置：隠蔽、偽装、政策（賢明）、恐れ、不合理な用心。

10. WHEEL OF FORTUNE.-Destiny, fortune, success, elevation, luck, felicity. 10. 運命の輪−運命、幸運（富）、成功、高めること、運勢、至福。

Reversed: Increase, abundance, superfluity. 逆位置：増加、豊富、余分（過剰）。

11. JUSTICE.--Equity, rightness, probity, executive; triumph of the deserving side in law. 11. 正義−公平、公正、誠実、管理職。法律に値する側での勝利。

Reversed: Law in all its departments, legal complications, bigotry, bias, excessive severity. 逆位置：すべてのその部門での法律、法的なやっかいな問題、偏屈、偏見、過度の厳しさ。

12. THE HANGED MAN.--Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy. 12. 吊られた男−賢明、慎重さ、識別力、試み（裁判）、犠牲、直観、占い、予言。

Reversed: Selfishness, the crowd, body politic. 逆位置：自己本位、群衆、国家。

13. DEATH.--End, mortality, destruction, corruption; also, for a man, the loss of a benefactor; for a woman, many contrarieties; for a maid, failure of marriage projects. 13. 死−終了、死、破壊、堕落。また、男性に対して、後援者の喪失。女性に対して、多くの反対。娘に対して、結婚計画の失敗。

Reversed: Inertia, sleep, lethargy, petrifaction, somnambulism; hope destroyed. 逆位置：惰性、睡眠、無気力、茫然自失、夢遊病。破壊される望み。

14. TEMPERANCE.--Economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation. 14. 節制−節約、適度、倹約、管理、適応。

Reversed: Things connected with churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, sometimes even the priest who will marry the Querent; also disunion, unfortunate combinations, competing interests. 逆位置：教会、宗教、宗派、聖職者（時には、質問者（被占者）と結婚するであろう聖職者でさえも）、などと関係のある事物。また、分裂、不運な結合、相反する利害関係。

15. THE DEVIL.--Ravage, violence, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, force, fatality; that which is predestined but is not for this reason evil. 15. 悪魔−破壊、暴力、猛烈さ、異常な努力、力、不運。運命づけられたものであるが、しかしこの理由で邪悪ではないもの。

Reversed: Evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness. 逆位置：不吉な宿命、弱さ、ささいな事、盲目。

16. THE TOWER.--Misery, distress, indigence, adversity, calamity, disgrace, deception, ruin. It is a card in particular of unforeseen catastrophe. 16. 塔−悲惨、苦悩、貧困、逆境、大きな災難、不名誉、欺瞞、破滅。それは特に、予期しない大惨事のカードである。

Reversed: According to one account, the same in a lesser degree; also oppression, imprisonment, tyranny. 逆位置：ある記述によると、より小さな程度で同じような意味。また、圧迫、監禁、暴政。

17. THE STAR.--Loss, theft, privation, abandonment; another reading says-hope and bright prospects, 17. 星−喪失、窃盗、欠乏、放棄。別の読み方では、希望および明るい見通し、

Reversed: Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence. 逆位置：横柄さ、高慢、無力。

18. THE MOON.--Hidden enemies, danger, calumny, darkness, terror, deception, occult forces, error. 18. 月−隠れた敵、危険、誹謗中傷、暗さ、恐怖、欺瞞、神秘的な力、誤り。

Reversed: Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error. 逆位置：不安定、移り気、沈黙、より小さい程度の欺瞞および誤り。

19. THE SUN.--Material happiness, fortunate marriage, contentment. 19. 太陽−物質的（肉体的）な幸福、幸運な結婚、満足。

Reversed: The same in a lesser sense. 逆位置：より小さな意味で、同じような意味。

20. THE LAST JUDGMENT.--Change of position, renewal, outcome. Another account specifies total loss though lawsuit. 20. 審判−立場の変化、復活、結果。別の記述では、訴訟による完全な損失を明示している。

Reversed: Weakness, pusillanimity, simplicity; also deliberation, decision, sentence. 逆位置：弱さ、小心、単純。また、熟慮（慎重）、決断（決議文）、判決。

ZERO. THE FOOL.--Folly, mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, bewrayment. 0. 愚者−愚かさ、熱狂、浪費、酔い（夢中）、精神錯乱（無我夢中）、逆上（熱狂）、裏切り。

Reversed: Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity. 逆位置：怠慢、留守、分配、不注意、無関心、無効、空虚。

21. THE WORLD.--Assured success, recompense, voyage, route, emigration, flight, change of place. 21. 世界−確実な成功、報酬、旅、道、移住、飛躍、場所の変更。

Reversed: Inertia, fixity, stagnation, permanence. 逆位置：惰性、不動、沈滞、永久。

　ここからは、後書きになります。

It will be seen that, except where there is an irresistible suggestion conveyed by the surface meaning, that which is extracted from the Trumps Major by the divinatory art is at once artificial and arbitrary, as it seems to me, in the highest degree. 表面の意味により伝えられる、抑え難い暗示があるものを除いて、占いの技術により「大アルカナ」から抽出されるものは、人工的（不自然）であると同時に恣意的（独断的）であるように思われるであろうし、最も高い階級においては、私にもそのように見える。

　ここで、「surface meaning／表面の意味」というのは、表に浮き出てきた意味ということで、誰が見てもそう思えるような意味ということでしょう。
　あと、「the highest degree／最も高い階級」というのは、魔術団の最高位にある階級か、もしくは内的成長を充分に遂げた人を表すと考えられますので、ウェイト氏が、自分自身の知恵や環境を、「ほぼ最高位にある」と考えているか、そういう高い地位にある人々の意見を聞いた結果ということですかね。
　つまり、「占いなんて、より低位の俗っぽい産物ではないか」と思っているわけです。

But of one order are the mysteries of light and of another are those of fantasy. しかし、ある1つの教団のそれ（最も高い階級）は、光の神秘であり、別のものは、空想の産物である。

　まあ、魔術団みたいなものには、色々あって、その指導者のレベルにも、色々なものがあるということですね。

The allocation of a fortune-telling aspect to these cards is the story of a prolonged impertinence. これらのカードへの占いの面での割り当ては、長期間の不適切な物語である。

　大アルカナは、今まで長期間に渡って、「占いの意味」を付与され、「占い」に使用されてきたが、それは間違った使用法であったと言っているわけです。

　とはいえ、ウェイト氏はタロットカードによる占いを完全に否定しているわけではないんですよね。
　今までの占いが、間違っているということを言っているわけです。
